Editing (RGB Split)

For my editing of my music video I have started off my keying out the green screen from the footage, so I then have a plain black back drop. I then started work on the visual effects on the base track, which is me singing to the camera and looking emotionless. The visual effect that I am using is known as Twitch, which is where you have an RGB split, with plays around with the color of the footgae, and gives the footage a nice technological atmosphere to the music video.

What I Will Be Using to Edit

For the editing process I will be using various types of software to edit with. The main editing software I will be using is Sony Vegas pro 12 and Adobe Premiere pro, I will use this to edit the main part of my music video, this is where all the footage will come together and where I will finally render all the footage and export it.

The other main software I will be using is Adobe After Effect which is a visual effects programme, and this is where I will be using all of the great effects I intend to use, such as the optical flares and the colour corrections. This is key to having a very successful music video for my genre as most RnB music videos use a lot of effects such as lighting effects to make the the music video look more professional.

As I want my music video to look as professional as possible I will be trying to simulate this kind of look, which "beat it" uses very well, It gives the video a whole new look and really gives the music video a very clean and professional look.

Digipak Changes

After much deliberation I have decided to change the style of the digipak as after much feedback from my peers, they think that I should feature more within the digipak, after careful consideration it is more appropriate if I am shown more as most digipaks have the artist on the front of the album, and this is what i intend to do, I have started on the front panel of the digipak, and I have gathered my inspiration from Jason Derulos album cover, I have implemented some elements from his front panel. Jason Deurlos album uses some lens flares to a small degree and so I would like to implement that In my front panel, by using lens flare it draws the attention of the consumer, and gives the album a professional look, but I need to be careful not to overuse the lens flare as it can become tacky if overused. Also I have slightly mimicked Jason's pose, but I am not fully looking to one side I am facing forward but just looking away from the camera lens, this gives me a more mysterious look.

Digipak Draft

Here is my draft of my digipak, which is still a work in progress, but the final version will be completed by next week.
As you can see I have gone for a white and red theme, the white is meant to represent purity and good, while the red color is a representation of Love, and pain, which are very much apparent within our music video. On the front cover of the we have 2 red dice, these both were taken by myself and were used for the front cover as I thought it was a great shot with the depth and field, and the dice has white and red colors on it and so goes nicely with my color scheme that I have chosen. I then did a red border for the front and back panel, so the images within that panel stand out more for the person looking at it.
The inside panels will contain images of the artist and the actress, plus on the inside of of the digipak there will be comments about the album from the main singer, which will give the album a nice authentic look to it.
The album is meant to represent a big hot shot gambler, and so this needs to be represented within the digipak I have been creating.
I have had a fair bit of experience using photoshop and so this task was not to bad to do, the only difficult part was deciding the color scheme and what images I should use for the album cover, not to mention the amount of different fonts I had to choose from, but after selecting the necessary elements for the digipak I found it easier to put it all together.
I also believe that after doing the digipak I will find it much easier to design and create the magazine advert as I have a basis to work from.

Chris Cunningham

Chris Cunningham is a British video artist. He was born in Reading, Berkshire in 1970 and grew up in Lakenheath, Suffolk.
Cunningham has primarily directed music videos for ambient music and IDM groups such as Autechre and Aphex Twin. He has also created art installations and directed short movies. He was approached to direct a movie version of the cyberpunk novel Neuromancer, but nothing came of early discussions. In the 2000s, Cunningham began doing music production work. He has also designed album artwork for a variety of musicians.

The reason why I chose to research Chris Cunningham was because, he directed the music video we gained inspiration from, The Weeknd, Wicked Games, and so I thought it would be appropriate that I use Chris as my research.

                             Videography

  • "Second Bad Vilbel" (1996) video for Autechre
  • "Back With The Killer Again" (1996) video for The Auteurs

  • "Tranquillizer" (1997) video for Geneva
  • "No More Talk" (1997) video for Dubstar
  • "Something to Say" (1997) video for Jocasta
  • "Come to Daddy" (1997) video for Aphex Twin
  • "Sport is Free" (1997) - commercial for ITV
  • "Fetish" (1998) - commercial for NUS
  • "Clip Clop" (1998) commercial for XFM London
  • "Only You" (1998) video for Portishead
  • "Frozen" (1998) video for Madonna
  • "Come On My Selector" (1998) video for Squarepusher
  • "Engine" (1999) commercial for Nissan. Featuring music by Boards of Canada
  • "All Is Full of Love" (1999) video for Björk
  • "Windowlicker" (1999) video for Aphex Twin
  • "Afrika Shox" (1999) video for Leftfield and Afrika Bambaataa
  • "Mental Wealth" (1999) commercial for Sony PlayStation
  • "Photocopier" (unreleased) commercial for Levi's
  • "Flex" (2000) video installation. Featuring music by Aphex Twin
  • "Monkey Drummer" (2001) video installation. Featuring "Mt Saint Michel + Saint Michaels mount" from Aphex Twin's album Drukqs
  • "Up and Down" (2002) - commercial for Levi's
  • "Photo Messaging" (2003) commercial for Orange
  • "Rubber Johnny" (2005) featuring "Afx237 V7" from Aphex Twin's album Drukqs
  • "Sheena Is a Parasite" (2006) video for The Horrors
  • "Gucci Flora" (2009) commercial for Gucci Perfume
  • "New York Is Killing Me (Chris Cunningham Remix)" (2010) video for Gil Scott-Heron
  • "Jaqapparatus 1" (2012) robotic art installation performance for Audi City London.
  • "Wicked Games" (2012) The Weeknd

Chris directed a Gucci commercial in 2009 and this was the final result for the commercial. The stunning video has very bright and vibrant colours and really stands out from other perfume commercials, the use of optical flares really helps with the effect. Also the lighting used in the commercial makes the actress look like an angel.
This is due to the fact that they have a backlight which gives the actress a golden outline on her hair, which personifies that she is like an angel, and makes you believe that she is an actual angel.

Genre Moodboard

This mood board shows all of the conventions of our music video, that appeals to out target audience which are teenagers. As you can see on the mood board we have many different types of images, we have drugs and alcohol, which is an ever more occurring element in the youth of today, and in my opinion teenagers will have a understanding about drugs and will think that its cool, furthermore in my music video we show the side effects of taking drugs and eventually show the serious side of taking it, so as well as having a music video that appeals to our target market we are also teaching them a valuable life lesson about not to tatke drugs and try and avoid them.

Filming Progression

Today I was using the green screen to film my base scene which is me singing directly into the camera, and I then I edited some of the scenes, by keying out the green screen.

Here is the green screen I used to film with, I rolled the green material out on the floor so I could use 3D editing of I wanted. I had to make sure that the lighting was perfect so when keying out the green screen becomes easier and more accurate.

This is the before and after editing of the green screen.

Artist Website Analysis of The Weeknd

As you can see The Weeknds website is very simple and effective, you have these interactive boxes on the website which when hovered over with the mouse cursor give you the name of what section you are selecting, for example if your mouse cursor hovered over the central image it will change the picture to something saying Fans, ect. Also at the top of the website we have Kiss Land in neon writing which attracts the audiences attention, and this is the name of the Weeknds new album, this is a very cheap and effective way to market themselves and there album in one place. As I said before the website is very simple yet effective, the use of colors on the website really stand out, the neon colors against the plain black background make the title pop out at the audience, plus the font style used for the album name really makes the audience look at it.

As you can see at the bottom of the website you have many tabs to click on, you have many of the other social networking websites to select if you want to keep up to date with the Weeknd, you have the shop where you can purchase the Weeknd clothing, you also have a link to there iTunes library, you can also sign up to a newsletter which regularly updates the users of upcoming events and new songs being released by The Weeknd.

The reason for making an album cover is to promote the artist and to gain income from the selling of the album cover, the album needs to reflect the genre of the artist and attract there select audience, promote star image. This is also done to market the artist,

Rihanna Rockstar Representation Video Analysis

Within the video she is imitating Slash from guns and roses, and she is wearing clothing like how he wore it, and so this is an example of intertextuality. She is saying in the lyrics that she is a rockstar and so she plays on the famous performer Slash and dresses up like him to further amplify her rockstar image to the audience. When watching the music video, Rihanna is playing a guitar and is playing on a stage, with a band as backup, this is one of Goodwins theories, where you have a performance in a music video. Rihanna also objectifies her self within the video, by sitting on the floor naked and painted black, this is not like an ordinary performance video, as most performance videos just have the star singing into a microphone and or playing an instrument.

Throughout the music video we see many close ups of Rihanna, the main body part that gets the most close ups was here lips, this can be satisfying for the male gaze as she projects her lips in a sexual manner furthermore her body is fragmented, so in the music video her lips her eyes and her mid section are all fragmented during the music video. There is numerous parts of the music video where iconography is there, such as the rockstar guitar and how she plays it, she places it like how Slash played it in a very famous music video, and so by this pose and how she dressed she is further amplifying her rockstar image.

This music video is stereotypical to the fact that most rockstars wear black and have there music based around dark, and her dark makeup and the black and white effect really portray the rockstar image once again.  disjuncture has not occurred, but she has points in the video where disjuncture does occur, where she says "F**k the law" and that lyric has no relation to the music video performance.

Laura Mulvey has a theory that there are male and female gazes, so in this particular music video, she would say that Rihanna has attracted the male gaze, but I contest this theory because some female viewers will admire Rihanna for her music video and will gain the gaze of the female viewers, not just the male viewers, in my opinion there shouldn't be sexest gazes but just a sexual gaze.

During the video we encounter a lot of illustration, this is where the lyrics match the visuals, throughout the music video she mentions she's a "rockstar" and she is dressed up at Slash so this shows that illustration occurred.

In the music video there is not a balance between narrative and performance, the entire music video is a performance video and is shown when Rihanna is playing the guitar and singing. also the music of the music video match the same as the cuts, so for example Rihanna may play the guitar and then as soon as she hits the guitar the shot changes to her naked covered in paint, and its a jump cut, from one scene to the other, there are not many smooth transitions throughout the music video this is because of the genre of the music video is very rock and roll and you generally associate rock and roll with chaos and anarchy and so the editing will reflect that, and so will have jump cuts and very aggressive editing, and will not use any slow transition fades.

During the music video we come across many close ups and extreme close ups of Rihanna when she is dancing or showing off her skin and is wearing less clothing. The camera movements are in time with the musicm so when the base drops or there is a heavy beat the camera may sway from side to side or may zoom in and out very quickly.

There is a master shot, this is where Rihanna is on a stage singing with her band in the background and this is used continuously throughout the music video, its a long shot of her generally but sometimes the camera movd upwards so it gave an aerial view of her and the band.

Digipak Research

This is the template I will be using  to map out my digipack, as you can see it has the measurements needed to construct my own digipak.

Here is a previous Digipack used by previous students, this is an excellent digipack because of the creativity of the pack, and the great images used. The genre of the album is very indie and romantic and this is illustrated by the red rose and the graceful images in the album cover. The front cover shows a tree overlaid with an image behind it and the font is elegant and simple, just like the album overall. on the back of the cover we have the bare code and the record label. Also the colour scheme is consistent, on the outer panels they are an aqua blue with some white text on it, then in the inner panels there is a continues image of a rose in a the woods or somewhere like that, plus on the inside cover there is some faint text which tells you about the songs included in the album.

This is in my opinion is not as a creative or as good as the previous digipack, as you can see the back panel of the digipack is just a collage of there photo shoot, which is not as good looking as the rose image on the previous cover, this is a a typical boy band album cover, and they have all the stars on the front, this is because the audience care a lot about the looks of the starts and so need to show them on the front of the album cover. This album also has a barcode on the back of the album, and also contains the number of songs within the album, and the song names are also placed on the back of the cover.

Vernalis' theory centres around 4 key concepts that all relate to the way the music video is constructed they are:

1. Narrative
2. Editing
3. Camera Movement and Framing
4. Diegesis

Further Audience Analysis

1) How would you describe the target audience for this kind of music? Is there a core and secondary audience?

I would describe that the target audience for this kind of music would be, basically teenagers and maybe slightly older, people in there early twenties could appreciate the song lyrics and the artwork that goes with the song. Our core audience is young people, as I said (17-23) and some of the people within this age range have some type of relation to the song and its visuals, such as drug taking, which has become an ever more increasing trend in young people.

2) How would you describe the tastes and attitudes of the target audience? What other do are they like to consume?

I would describe my audience to be very much transparent as in they will change to whatever the trend is at that time. Which is a good thing for our music video, because this means we can kind of mould our audience to like the music video. Our audience will like the mainstream type of music, such as Drake and Rihanna, and so people would appeal to this type of music genre.

3) Outline there media consumption profile?

The target audience would consume many different types of of media, ranging from Radio to TV. The target audience would consume modern magazines, such as OK magazine and magazines that reveal celebrity life and in trend fashion. The radio stations that our audience may listen to are KissFM and CapitalFM and so on, these radio stations play very much mainstream music, and our audience likes the mainstream type of music. The type of TV shows that people watch are mainly TV dramas like Hollyoaks, Eastenders, Misfts and Skins, these are just to name a few.

4) What function does this kind of music serve to the audience (Uses and Gratification's Theory)?

In our music video there is sexual stimulation, this is shown when we have a dance pole and our female actress sexualy walks around the pole in her revealing clothing, this would cause gaze, mainly for the male gaze because we have an attractive woman. It also causes relaxation, this is because the song used is very mellow and therapeutic and causes the audience to relax, and when you associate drugs with a song you think of a slow song that has a low key, which this one is.

Star Image Transformation - Madonna

Uses and Gratifications Theory

Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT) is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy specific needs. UGT is an audience-centered approach to understanding mass communication. Diverging from other media effect theories that question "what do media do to people?", UGT focuses on "what do people do with media?"
This Communication theory is positivistic in its approach, based in the socio-psychological communication tradition, and focuses on communication at the mass media scale. The driving question of UGT is: Why do people use media and what do they use them for? UGT discusses how users deliberately choose media that will satisfy given needs and allow one to enhance knowledge, relaxation, social interactions/companionship, diversion, or escape.
It assumes that audience members are not passive consumers of media. Rather, the audience has power over their media consumption and assumes an active role in interpreting and integrating media into their own lives. Unlike other theoretical perspectives, UGT holds that audiences are responsible for choosing media to meet their desires and needs to achieve gratification. This theory would then imply that the media compete against other information sources for viewers' gratification.
UGT has a heuristic value today because it gives communication scholars a "perspective through which a number of ideas and theories about media choice, consumption, and even impact can be viewed."

Audience Analysis Research

For my music video we tried to aim our music video at the young audience so ages between 16 and above, depending on what they enjoy, because our music video involves drugs and sexual scenes and so some of the viewers may not like watching it but, the younger audience may have more interest in the music video, this is because the younger generation are more exposed to the drugs and sex than ever before and so by making a video involving these aspects, people will enjoy the music video more, plus our music video has got a mysterious story line and so people will need to concentrate and analyse the video to understand the music video fully.
The reason I decided to do a music video like this one is because, people my age or above may have a better understanding in the concept of the music videos narrative, this is because people are age have an intrest in drugs and sex, because we hear a lot about it in school and from the media and so people will want to find out more. Our music video is a way of showing the youth of today how bad drugs can be, we this illustrate this by showing the main star overdosing from drugs, and maybe this message we are trying to portray from the music video will make people think twice before taking illegal drugs.

Rihanna - Diamonds Music Video Analysis

This shot is a very simple shot yet a very beautiful and effective shot, its all about the the lighting in this shot, because as you can see there is a bright light shinning from behind her which defines her body and her hair and gives off a really nice lens flare as well when she is out of the way of the light slightly. And this is also another video edited to be black and white.

Here is another beautiful shot of what looks like to be either a sunrise or sunset, and this is in color unlike most of the other parts of the video, and this catches the viewers attention because they are used to a black and white picture but now they changed this shot to be in color and it gains the attention and keeps the audience interested in the music video.
Water is used a lot these days from what I have watched recently its starting to become a convention within music videos, and its a very effective shot of an Arial view of her laying on top of the water and looking up at the camera emotionless, again this would look great if we could try and replicate it in our own music video. In some way this shot also gains the male gaze as she is wearing a see through dress and may cause her to be viewed as an object of desire

Andrew Goodwin's Theory Research

Thursday 3 October 2013

The National - Graceless

In The Nationals music video they have a lot of there scenes in a swimming pool which was a good way of drawing the attention of the audience, and we want to replicate this in out video by filming underwater.

In music videos you do have a fair few that now have just a black and white video, which in my opinion is an artistic view point at a music video, because you don't have vibrant colors to attract the viewers attention, you have to have a strong performance and a creative music video and The National have done a very good job in doing this.

There is a section of the music video where they have a spud gun and are shooting fruit of a tree stump, and they use slow motion when doing this as seen by the screen shot. We want to include some slow motion shots in our music video and we will take note on how its done by watching this music video as an example.

Music Video Analysis - Charlie XCX Super Love

This occurs often in music videos, this is so the viewers know that she is the main start in the music video. And she is centralised in the shot to show her dominance in the shot. In our music video we will try and implement the star factor and centralise it round two main characters.

In this shot she has gained the male gaze with her sexual faces and dancing, which attracts the audience to the music video. We want to replicate this in our music video with another female actress.

Here in this shot we have Charlie and the lighting  used is very effective and we want to use the same type of lightning in our music video and how they have used it in this one really show off her body and creates a sexy look for her.

The Weeknd Research

The Weeknd's songs are built around a fogged, crepuscular production, and feature slow tempos rumbling bass, and forlorn echoes. The Weeknd sings in a falsetto register, and exhibits a pleading, anxious tone. inging's "tremulous quality" similar to Michael Jackson, but writes that he eschews Jackson's "strong basis in the blues" for a more Arabic-influenced melisma.
His emotional, plaintive lyrics often express feelings of hurt and deal with subject matter such as sex, drugs, and partying. Hermoine Hoby of The Guardian characterizes the Weeknd's songs as "narcotised-slow jams" and delineates their message as "partying is an existential experience, sex is fraught with alienation, and everything registers as unreal and unsettling
Music journalists associate the Weeknd with PBR&B, an emerging wave of recording artists whose music expands on the sound and sensibility of R&B. Mistry writes that he "will be obsequiously praised as the future of R&B music – because [he] is a black singer, not because he’s making quantifiable, canonical R&B"

Other Artists Like The Weeknd

1) Massive Attack
Fans of the TV show House will recognize Massive Attack's "Teardrop On Fire" as the show's theme song. Hopefully, fans of the show were inspired to explore Massive Attack's music further, because what they'd find is one of the most innovative and influential catalogs of the '90s. Massive Attack paved the road for the trip hop genre.
The group crafted cinematic soundscapes, dropped in hip-hop drums, and laced it all with touching vocals."Weather Storm" is the sound of a hospital waiting room on a rainy night while waiting for a loved one to get out of surgery. Meanwhile, we're pretty sure "Exchange" is the song they play in the escalator up to heaven, or possibly Las Vegas.

2) JMSN
He's often dubbed "the white Weeknd." But while Weeknd is a relative newcomer, JMSN could be considered an industry veteran, one who's been kicking around since 2005. (Get familiar. JMSN dropped his first album in 2006, Love Arcade. Back then went by the name Snowhite, and toured with a band that also went by the name Love Arcade. After the band broke up, he reemerged as Christian TV, but he never saw the release of an actual album.
Since then, he split with his label, changed his name to JMSN, and dropped Priscilla. He dubbed the music "Hippie R&B" and won over critics with his pensive production. Granted, he did borrow some of his dark aesthetic from The Weeknd, but he's managed to build a whole new kind of buzz. He's working on an album with Ab-Soul called Unit 6, which we hope will help him shed the comparisons.

3) August Alsina
With The Weeknd firmly established as one of the most important voices in R&B today, we're still looking at the rising class of R&B stars. There are a few names that come to mind, but none more potent than August Alsina. Whereas a lot of Weeknd's appeal came from anonymity, the most interesting part about Alsina might be his backstory. He's lived quite a life already, and has dealt with a fair amount of death. To paraphrase Kanye, great art comes from great suffering, but also from great artists. Here's to hoping Alsina can fit the bill and become the next big R&B star. Time will tell.

My lip Sync Preliminary Task

When I was doing my preliminary task I tried to go for a slightly challenging song that has very quick lyrics and yes at some points of the short video are not synched fully and this is just my first go at trying to synch the music with my lips. The reason I choose a difficult song is so that If i lip synch well in this video, I can lip synch a lot easier with a slower song.

It was a very simple filming process because I only used 2 different shots, the first shot was the camera looking directly at me and I sung towards it and that was my base shot, the the second shot was a profile shot on my left which was used to mix up the videos angles.

The editing process was fairly simple, because I had my bass shot throughout the video and all I did was put the second shot on the top line and deleted sections of it to show the base shot, I edited this preliminary on Sony Vegas Pro 12.

WE HAVE CHANGED OUR SONG TO "THE WEEKEND WICKED GAMES"

After much consideration we have decided to change our music video song to Wicked Games by the weekend. This is because with our original choice the lyrics where very narrow minded and we found it hard finding ways to film it, so we both decided to change it. In my opinion I think that with our new song would be easier to film as the lyrics are more open to interpretation and so the audience can understand the narrative better.

Keeping in mind the swearing within the song will not be heard as we will edit it out.

                                                              "Wicked Games Lyrics"

I left my girl back home
I don't love her no more
And she'll never fucking know that
These fucking eyes that I'm staring at
Let me see that ass
Look at all this cash
And I emptied out my cards too
Now I'm fucking leaning on that

Bring your love baby I could bring my shame
Bring the drugs baby I could bring my pain
I got my heart right here
I got my scars right here
Bring the cups baby I could bring the drink
Bring your body baby I could bring you fame
And that's my motherfucking words too
Just let me motherfucking love you

Listen ma I'll give you all I got
Get me off of this
I need confidence in myself
Listen ma I'll give you all of me
Give me all of it
I need all of it to myself

So tell me you love me
Only for tonight
Only for one night
Even though you don't love me
Just tell me you love me
I'll give you what I need
I'll give you all of me
Even though you don't love me

Let me see you dance
I love to watch you prance
Take you down another level
Get you dancing with the devil
Take a shot of this
But I'm warning you
I'm on that shit that you can't smell baby
So put down your perfume

Bring your love baby I could bring my shame
Bring the drugs baby I could bring my pain
I got my heart right here
I got my scars right here
Bring the cups baby I could bring the drink
Bring your body baby I could bring you fame
And that's my motherfucking words too
So let me motherfucking love you

Listen ma I'll give you all I got
Get me off of this
I need confidence in myself
Listen ma I'll give you all of me
Give me all of it
I need all of it to myself

So tell me you love me
Only for tonight
Only for one night
Even though you don't love me
Just tell me you love me
I'll give you what I need
I'll give you all of me
Even though you don't love me
