The Weeknd Research

The Weeknd's songs are built around a fogged, crepuscular production, and feature slow tempos rumbling bass, and forlorn echoes. The Weeknd sings in a falsetto register, and exhibits a pleading, anxious tone. inging's "tremulous quality" similar to Michael Jackson, but writes that he eschews Jackson's "strong basis in the blues" for a more Arabic-influenced melisma.
His emotional, plaintive lyrics often express feelings of hurt and deal with subject matter such as sex, drugs, and partying. Hermoine Hoby of The Guardian characterizes the Weeknd's songs as "narcotised-slow jams" and delineates their message as "partying is an existential experience, sex is fraught with alienation, and everything registers as unreal and unsettling
Music journalists associate the Weeknd with PBR&B, an emerging wave of recording artists whose music expands on the sound and sensibility of R&B. Mistry writes that he "will be obsequiously praised as the future of R&B music – because [he] is a black singer, not because he’s making quantifiable, canonical R&B"

Other Artists Like The Weeknd

1) Massive Attack
Fans of the TV show House will recognize Massive Attack's "Teardrop On Fire" as the show's theme song. Hopefully, fans of the show were inspired to explore Massive Attack's music further, because what they'd find is one of the most innovative and influential catalogs of the '90s. Massive Attack paved the road for the trip hop genre.
The group crafted cinematic soundscapes, dropped in hip-hop drums, and laced it all with touching vocals."Weather Storm" is the sound of a hospital waiting room on a rainy night while waiting for a loved one to get out of surgery. Meanwhile, we're pretty sure "Exchange" is the song they play in the escalator up to heaven, or possibly Las Vegas.

2) JMSN
He's often dubbed "the white Weeknd." But while Weeknd is a relative newcomer, JMSN could be considered an industry veteran, one who's been kicking around since 2005. (Get familiar. JMSN dropped his first album in 2006, Love Arcade. Back then went by the name Snowhite, and toured with a band that also went by the name Love Arcade. After the band broke up, he reemerged as Christian TV, but he never saw the release of an actual album.
Since then, he split with his label, changed his name to JMSN, and dropped Priscilla. He dubbed the music "Hippie R&B" and won over critics with his pensive production. Granted, he did borrow some of his dark aesthetic from The Weeknd, but he's managed to build a whole new kind of buzz. He's working on an album with Ab-Soul called Unit 6, which we hope will help him shed the comparisons.

3) August Alsina
With The Weeknd firmly established as one of the most important voices in R&B today, we're still looking at the rising class of R&B stars. There are a few names that come to mind, but none more potent than August Alsina. Whereas a lot of Weeknd's appeal came from anonymity, the most interesting part about Alsina might be his backstory. He's lived quite a life already, and has dealt with a fair amount of death. To paraphrase Kanye, great art comes from great suffering, but also from great artists. Here's to hoping Alsina can fit the bill and become the next big R&B star. Time will tell.

My lip Sync Preliminary Task

When I was doing my preliminary task I tried to go for a slightly challenging song that has very quick lyrics and yes at some points of the short video are not synched fully and this is just my first go at trying to synch the music with my lips. The reason I choose a difficult song is so that If i lip synch well in this video, I can lip synch a lot easier with a slower song.

It was a very simple filming process because I only used 2 different shots, the first shot was the camera looking directly at me and I sung towards it and that was my base shot, the the second shot was a profile shot on my left which was used to mix up the videos angles.

The editing process was fairly simple, because I had my bass shot throughout the video and all I did was put the second shot on the top line and deleted sections of it to show the base shot, I edited this preliminary on Sony Vegas Pro 12.

WE HAVE CHANGED OUR SONG TO "THE WEEKEND WICKED GAMES"

After much consideration we have decided to change our music video song to Wicked Games by the weekend. This is because with our original choice the lyrics where very narrow minded and we found it hard finding ways to film it, so we both decided to change it. In my opinion I think that with our new song would be easier to film as the lyrics are more open to interpretation and so the audience can understand the narrative better.

Keeping in mind the swearing within the song will not be heard as we will edit it out.

                                                              "Wicked Games Lyrics"

I left my girl back home
I don't love her no more
And she'll never fucking know that
These fucking eyes that I'm staring at
Let me see that ass
Look at all this cash
And I emptied out my cards too
Now I'm fucking leaning on that

Bring your love baby I could bring my shame
Bring the drugs baby I could bring my pain
I got my heart right here
I got my scars right here
Bring the cups baby I could bring the drink
Bring your body baby I could bring you fame
And that's my motherfucking words too
Just let me motherfucking love you

Listen ma I'll give you all I got
Get me off of this
I need confidence in myself
Listen ma I'll give you all of me
Give me all of it
I need all of it to myself

So tell me you love me
Only for tonight
Only for one night
Even though you don't love me
Just tell me you love me
I'll give you what I need
I'll give you all of me
Even though you don't love me

Let me see you dance
I love to watch you prance
Take you down another level
Get you dancing with the devil
Take a shot of this
But I'm warning you
I'm on that shit that you can't smell baby
So put down your perfume

Bring your love baby I could bring my shame
Bring the drugs baby I could bring my pain
I got my heart right here
I got my scars right here
Bring the cups baby I could bring the drink
Bring your body baby I could bring you fame
And that's my motherfucking words too
So let me motherfucking love you

Listen ma I'll give you all I got
Get me off of this
I need confidence in myself
Listen ma I'll give you all of me
Give me all of it
I need all of it to myself

So tell me you love me
Only for tonight
Only for one night
Even though you don't love me
Just tell me you love me
I'll give you what I need
I'll give you all of me
Even though you don't love me

Our Music Video Pitch

Laura Mulvey Blog Post

Laura Muvley was born on the 15th of August 1941, she is a British female feminist. And she was educated at St Hildas college, Oxford.

Mulvey states that she intends to use Freud and Lacan's concepts as a "political weapon." She then used some of their concepts to argue that the cinematic apparatus of classical Hollywood cinema inevitably put the spectator in a masculine subject position, with the figure of the woman on screen as the object of desire and "the male gaze." In the era of classical Hollywood cinema, viewers were encouraged to identify with the protagonist of the film, who were and still are overwhelmingly male. Meanwhile, Hollywood women characters of the 1950s and '60s were, according to Mulvey, coded with "to-be-looked-at-ness" while the camera positioning and the male viewer constituted the "bearer of the look." Mulvey suggests two distinct modes of the male gaze of this era: "voyeuristic" (i.e. seeing woman as image "to be looked at") and "fetishistic" (i.e. seeing woman as a substitute for "the lack," the underlying psychoanalytic fear of castration).

Mulvey argues that the only way to annihilate the patriarchal Hollywood system is to radically challenge and re-shape the filmic strategies of classical Hollywood with alternative feminist methods. She calls for a new feminist avant-garde filmmaking that would rupture the narrative pleasure of classical Hollywood filmmaking. She writes, "It is said that analysing pleasure or beauty annihilates it. That is the intention of this article."

The Videographers Guide Research

When watching this video documentary I gained valuable information that would help with my music video. It showed that you can make a great looking music video under a small budget, and that is exactly what I will be doing. They also mention that you can spend minimal amounts of money on locations, for example you could have an amazing looking video from just walking into London and filming in the streets which would be cheap yet effective.

Costumes and Props

For the male actor start in out music video we want him to be wearing a suit with a white shirt underneath the suit, this makes the audience think he is a business man or is wealthy, we also want him to look presentable and smart for the camera, because if we had him wear jeans and a polo shirt, it will not give off the impression I am looking for. In the original music video Enrique is wearing casual clothing like a leather jacket and jeans, but we want to be different and take a different route and go for a classy look.

The woman will be slightly opposite from the man as she is more relaxed and lives a slightly easier life, so in one scene she is in a spa in a hot tub and relaxing and then after she leaves the spa she is in more casual clothing.
The man will be wearing a nice watch, this will enhance the effect that out actor is a successful businessman and has money.

The man and woman will both have a smartphone, because in this day and age most young people carry round a smartphone device and in many mainstream music videos now they promote many different expensive products, so in our music video we will be showing off expensive watches and mobile phones.

"Taking Back My Love" Cover and Choreographed Routine

I wanted to see different variations on how people present the song to me, so for this example we have two people, a man and a female and they are dancing to the song which they sung themselves, and I found when watching them, that it drew me in because of how well they were presenting themselves to the camera and this gives me some inspiration for our version of the song, obviously we don't intend to copy this exactly but the more covers I watch the more ideas I will have for our version.

Lyrics to "Taking Back My Love" By Enrique and Ciara

Enrique Iglesias - Takin' Back My Love [Feat. Ciara] lyrics
Go ahead , just leave
Can`t hold you , you`re free
You take all these things
If they mean so much to you
I gave you your dreams
Cause you meant the world
So did I deserve to be left in hurt
Sou think I don`t know
You`re out of control
And then I find all this from my boys
Girl you said I`m cold , you saving souls
You already know I`m not a touching material

I give it all up
But I`m taking back my love ,
I`m taking back my love ,
I`m taking back my love ,
I`ve giving you too much,
But I`m taking back my love,
I`m taking back my love, my love,my love,my love,my love

What did I do?
But give up to you
I`m just confused
As I stand here look at you
From head to feet
Always about me
Go ahead keep your keys
It`s not what I need from you
You think that`s enough (I do)
You made your self cold(Oh yeah)
How could you believe
You`re more then me , I`m your girl
You`re out of control (So what)
How could you let go (Oh yeah)
Don`t you know I`m not touching material

I give it all up
But I`m taking back my love ,
I`m taking back my love ,
I`m taking back my love ,
I`ve giving you too much,
But I`m taking back my love,
I`m taking back my love, my love,my love,my love,my love ... 2x

So all this love
I gave you take it away
You think material is the reason I came
If I have nothing what do you want me to say?
You take your money you take it all away

I give it all up
But I`m taking back my love ,
I`m taking back my love ,
I`m taking back my love ,
I`ve giving you too much,
But I`m taking back my love,
I`m takïng back my love, my love,my love,my love,my love ... 2x

"Takin' Back My Love" - Enrique Iglesias feat. Ciara

This is the video I choose for the music video because It has a narrative that I liked allot and also the type of music playing is very upbeat and can keep viewers entertained for a long period of time.

1) The first point that I noticed when watching this specific music video is that there are forms of illustration being used. Illustrating is where there are links between the lyrics and visuals of the music video. So the song is called taking back my love. and Enrique and Ciara are having a breakup and they are smashing up the house and she is taking back her loves which means she is throwing out all of his clothes and smashing the house to show her independence from him.

2) The second point I noticed was that there was a link between the music and visuals. When ever the music was fast paced or speeded up there was faster cuts from close ups of Enrique to Ciara where much faster, and when the beat was slowed down more it was longer cuts of either slow motion smashing of objects or both of them close up in each others faces.

 3) There are a large amount of close ups of the stars, but this generally occurs when the music has slowed down, and both of the singers sing there solos, and when the music speeds up again it goes back to smashing of objects and mid range to long shots.

4) There are small amounts of voyeurism within the video for both male and female, there is one main section where the is sexual tension, and this is shown when they are very close to each other and the goes in for a kiss but then she pushed him away with her finger, but other than that there is not to much Voyeurism.

Chris Brown - Love More ft. Nicki Minaj

During the music video I want to incorporate some type of dancing just to break up the video so it does not become boring to watch. I choose this song because of the choreography and how much energy is brought out from the song. And I would like to use some of the flare effects as well in our music video

1) When watching the music video there were no link between the music and visuals, the visuals where basically driving to a night club and dancing, and the lyrics where about Love More and about loving people, and there is the complete opposite within the lyrics because you here him talking about one night stands and not have emotional attachment.

2) The link between the music and visuals is shown when the music pics up speed the faster dancing is happening, there are not as many cuts as the previous video, but because its a party video there are a lot of dance sequences which occurs when the beat drops and the music becomes more vibrant.

3) There are some close ups of both starts but as before not as many as the previous video, for chris brown I only noticed 4 close ups, but with Niki Minaj's part you see a lot more close ups than Chris Brown. This is because It appeals to the male market and so this has some hints of voyeurism where Niki shows her behind to the camera and some of the lyrics are sightly explicit.

The Weeknd - Wicked Games

I am wanting to present the music video in black and white like the original music video. But instead of just sitting at a microphone I want to have some acting for some shots so it brings depth in my music video.

1) In the original music video you have very basic camera shots of the main star standing and singing but there is not really any relation between the lyrics and the visuals, and so this lacked the illustrating aspect of the music video.

2) There is not many links to the music video and visuals, because it is just the star standing there singing looking into the camera and so the music does not link with the visuals.

3) At the start of the music video you have a woman dancing with just a jacket on and you can see her breast slightly and this can be interpreted as voyeurism, because it is causing people to look at her and be attached to her.
